This test measures the concentration of iodine in urine and is used to assess the current iodine status of the body. Since most dietary iodine is excreted in urine, urinary iodine concentration is a reliable indicator of recent iodine intake.
The test is mainly used in the evaluation of thyroid function, in cases of suspected iodine deficiency or excess, and as part of preventive examinations. Both insufficient and excessive iodine intake may negatively affect thyroid hormone production and overall metabolic balance.
