The iron test is a blood test that measures the level of iron in the blood. Iron is a key mineral needed by the body for the production of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. Abnormal iron levels can indicate iron deficiency (anemia), iron overload (hemochromatosis), or other disorders of iron metabolism. This test is often used to diagnose the causes of fatigue, weakness, and other symptoms associated with iron deficiency or excess in the body.
