This test measures the level of methylmalonic acid in the blood, which is a sensitive marker of functional vitamin B12 deficiency. Elevated levels occur when vitamin B12 metabolism is impaired, often before a decrease in serum vitamin B12 concentration becomes apparent.
The test is mainly used when vitamin B12 deficiency is suspected, in patients with neurological symptoms, anemia of unclear origin, or borderline vitamin B12 levels. Measurement of MMA enables early detection of deficiency and more accurate assessment of the biological availability of vitamin B12 in the body.
