Cortisol is a stress hormone produced by the adrenal glands that plays a key role in regulating metabolism, immune responses, and the body’s reaction to stress. It helps the body cope with stressful situations by increasing blood glucose levels and ensuring sufficient energy to handle physical or psychological strain. Cortisol also influences inflammatory processes and can suppress immune activity.
Its levels naturally fluctuate throughout the day - highest in the morning and gradually decreasing as the day progresses. Long-term elevated cortisol levels may be associated with the development of health issues such as high blood pressure, impaired glucose metabolism, or a weakened immune system.
Cortisol Testing Options
Blood sample
Measurement of cortisol from venous blood provides information about the hormone level at a specific point in time, most commonly in the morning. This option is suitable for a basic, orientational assessment of cortisol levels.
Single saliva sample
A non-invasive testing option that allows cortisol measurement from saliva at a single time point. The sample can be collected at home and is particularly suitable for monitoring cortisol levels without the need for a blood draw.
Timed saliva sampling (cortisol curve)
An extended option including four saliva samples collected at different times during one day, allowing assessment of the daily (diurnal) cortisol profile. The package includes detailed sampling instructions.
