The HLA-DQ2/DQ8 genetic test identifies inherited genetic predispositions to celiac disease, an autoimmune condition triggered by gluten. The test detects genetic markers associated with susceptibility to celiac disease and can help clarify uncertain diagnostic results. A negative result makes celiac disease highly unlikely, while a positive result indicates genetic susceptibility but does not confirm the disease.

Detailed information

Product detailed description

The HLA-DQ2/DQ8 genetic test identifies inherited genetic predispositions to celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system reacts abnormally to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. In people with celiac disease, gluten consumption can trigger inflammation and damage to the lining of the small intestine, potentially leading to nutrient malabsorption and various health problems.

HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 genetic variants are the main inherited genetic factors associated with celiac disease. They are involved in immune system function and the recognition of specific gluten-derived peptides. However, carrying these variants does not necessarily mean that a person has celiac disease or will develop it in the future.

The celiac disease genetic test can be particularly useful for individuals with inconclusive diagnostic results, a family history of celiac disease, or those already following a gluten-free diet. The absence of the main HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 risk variants makes celiac disease highly unlikely.

What does the test detect?

  • The presence of selected HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 genetic variants associated with celiac disease.

  • Inherited genetic predispositions to developing celiac disease.

  • Genetic information that may help clarify inconclusive diagnostic findings.

  • Whether celiac disease is highly unlikely based on the genetic markers tested.

Who may benefit from this test?

HLA-DQ2/DQ8 genetic testing may be particularly useful for people with a family history of celiac disease, individuals with unclear celiac disease test results, or those who have already reduced or eliminated gluten from their diet.

The genetic test alone cannot diagnose celiac disease. Diagnosis primarily involves specific antibody blood tests and, when indicated, examination of the small intestine. A positive genetic result does not, by itself, justify starting a gluten-free diet.
