Product detailed description
Hepatitis C (HCV) is a viral infection that affects the liver. The infection often remains asymptomatic for a long period of time, yet it can lead to chronic liver inflammation, liver cirrhosis, or an increased risk of liver cancer. Early detection of the infection is therefore very important.
As part of this testing service, you can choose between two testing options:
Anti-HCV (Hepatitis C Virus Antibodies)
This test detects antibodies produced by the immune system after exposure to the hepatitis C virus. A positive result indicates that you have been exposed to the virus at some point; however, it does not by itself confirm whether the infection is currently active.
HCV RNA (PCR)
This test directly detects the genetic material (RNA) of the hepatitis C virus in the blood. It is used to confirm an active infection, diagnose early stages of infection before antibodies have developed, and monitor the effectiveness of treatment.
When is testing recommended?
- After a potential exposure to blood or blood products.
- After an injury caused by a used needle or other sharp object.
- Following unprotected sexual contact with a person whose HCV status is unknown.
- If you have elevated liver enzyme levels of unclear origin.
- If you would like reassurance about your health status.
