Product detailed description
What is histamine?
Histamine is a naturally occurring compound that performs several important functions in the body. It plays a key role in immune responses, regulates stomach acid secretion, and acts as a signaling molecule between cells.
In the intestine, histamine is produced not only by the body's own cells but also by certain gut bacteria. When histamine production exceeds the body's ability to break it down, unpleasant symptoms may develop.
What does stool histamine testing measure?
The test determines the concentration of histamine directly in a stool sample. The result provides information about the amount of histamine present in the intestinal environment, where many symptoms associated with histamine intolerance or intestinal dysbiosis may originate.
Unlike the DAO (diamine oxidase) blood test, which evaluates the body's ability to break down histamine, stool histamine testing measures the amount of histamine present directly in the gut.
These two tests complement each other and, when interpreted together, can contribute to a more comprehensive assessment.
Who is this test suitable for?
We recommend stool histamine testing particularly for individuals who experience:
- chronic bloating,
- abdominal pain,
- diarrhea or alternating diarrhea and constipation,
- symptoms after consuming fermented or aged foods,
- suspected histamine intolerance,
- chronic digestive problems without a clear cause,
- suspected gut microbiota imbalance (intestinal dysbiosis).
What symptoms may be associated with elevated intestinal histamine?
Higher histamine concentrations in the gut may be associated with:
- bloating,
- abdominal pain,
- diarrhea,
- a feeling of fullness,
- nausea,
- increased sensitivity to certain foods.
Some individuals may also experience symptoms outside the digestive tract, including headaches, migraines, itchy skin, or facial flushing. However, these symptoms may have other causes and should always be interpreted together with other laboratory findings and clinical symptoms.
How should the results be interpreted?
Stool histamine levels should always be evaluated in conjunction with clinical symptoms and other laboratory test results.
If elevated histamine levels are detected, additional testing may be recommended, including:
- DAO (diamine oxidase) enzyme testing from blood,
- gut microbiome analysis,
- intestinal permeability testing (zonulin),
- laboratory tests evaluating intestinal inflammation or other causes of digestive disorders.
Why choose stool histamine testing?
- Measures histamine directly within the intestinal environment.
- Supports the assessment of suspected histamine intolerance.
- May reveal a relationship between the gut microbiome and increased histamine production.
- Complements DAO enzyme testing from blood.
- Convenient home stool sample collection.
