Product detailed description
The Neurodegenerative Disease Risk Genetic Test analyzes selected inherited genetic variants associated with brain function, neuronal metabolism, and biological processes involved in nervous system aging. The panel includes six genes – APOE, COMT, MTHFR, MTRR, MTR, and BDNF – which contribute to important biological pathways involved in brain health.
Neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, involve progressive damage to nerve cells. Their development is influenced by a complex combination of genetic factors, aging, overall health, and environmental influences.
The test includes the APOE gene, certain variants of which are among the strongest known genetic risk factors for late-onset Alzheimer's disease. The other genes in the panel are involved in biological processes such as dopamine metabolism, folate and homocysteine metabolism, and neuronal plasticity.
What does the genetic test analyze?
-
APOE – Alzheimer's disease genetic susceptibility: Variants associated with lipid metabolism in the brain and Alzheimer's disease risk, particularly the APOE ε4 allele.
-
COMT – Dopamine metabolism: Genetic variations affecting an enzyme involved in the breakdown of dopamine and other catecholamines.
-
MTHFR – Folate metabolism: Genetic factors involved in vitamin B9 metabolism and biochemical processes important for DNA synthesis.
-
MTRR and MTR – Vitamin B12 and homocysteine metabolism: Genes involved in homocysteine conversion and the methylation cycle.
-
BDNF – Neuroplasticity: Genetic variants related to a protein that supports neuronal survival, communication, and the brain's ability to adapt.
Who may benefit from this genetic test?
-
Individuals interested in genetic factors associated with brain health and nervous system aging.
-
People seeking information about genetic susceptibility to Alzheimer's disease.
-
Those interested in dopamine, folate, and homocysteine metabolism.
-
Individuals exploring neurogenetics, cognitive health, and longevity.
-
People seeking supplementary genetic insights following consultation with a healthcare professional or genetic counselor.
What can the results reveal?
The test identifies selected inherited variants in the APOE, COMT, MTHFR, MTRR, MTR, and BDNF genes.
The most clinically established risk association within this panel involves the APOE gene. Carrying the APOE ε4 allele is associated with an increased likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease, although many carriers never develop the condition.
Results from the other genes provide supplementary information about biological pathways associated with nervous system function. Their clinical usefulness for predicting individual neurodegenerative disease risk remains limited.
Important: Genetic testing cannot independently predict whether an individual will develop Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, or another neurodegenerative disorder. A negative result does not rule out these conditions. This test is not intended to diagnose dementia or assess current memory or cognitive performance. Results, particularly APOE findings, should be interpreted with appropriate medical or genetic counseling.
