The tryptase blood test measures the concentration of tryptase, an enzyme released primarily by mast cells. Tryptase levels may increase following mast cell activation, for example during a severe allergic or anaphylactic reaction.

Tryptase measurement is mainly used as a supportive test when anaphylaxis is suspected and in the diagnosis of conditions associated with an increased number or activation of mast cells, such as mastocytosis. Both a single measurement and comparison of a sample taken during or shortly after an acute reaction with the patient’s baseline tryptase level may be useful. The result should always be interpreted together with clinical symptoms and other laboratory findings.
