The Factor II (F2) genetic test identifies the prothrombin G20210A mutation, an inherited risk factor for increased blood clotting and venous thrombosis. It helps assess genetic susceptibility to deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Detailed information

Product detailed description

The Thrombotest – Factor II, Prothrombin (F2) genetic test is designed to identify an inherited predisposition to increased blood clotting (thrombophilia). It focuses on a mutation in the F2 gene, one of the most common genetic causes of an increased risk of venous thrombosis.

The F2 gene provides instructions for producing prothrombin (coagulation factor II), a protein essential for normal blood clotting. During the clotting process, prothrombin is converted into thrombin, which helps form blood clots and stop bleeding. The F2 G20210A genetic variant may lead to increased prothrombin production, making the blood more prone to abnormal clot formation. This can increase the risk of conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).

What can this genetic test tell you?

The test identifies whether you carry the F2 G20210A mutation, which is associated with an increased risk of venous thrombosis. It also determines whether the mutation is present in one copy of the gene (heterozygous) or both copies (homozygous), providing important information for assessing individual genetic risk.

Understanding your genetic predisposition may be particularly useful if you have a family history of thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, have experienced a previous thromboembolic event, or require an individualized risk assessment in situations such as pregnancy, estrogen-containing hormonal contraception, planned surgery, or prolonged immobilization.

Who may benefit from this test?

Genetic testing may be recommended for individuals with a personal or family history of venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or suspected inherited thrombophilia. The decision to undergo testing should be discussed with a healthcare professional, as genetic screening is not routinely necessary for everyone and its usefulness depends on individual risk factors.

Important: A positive result does not mean that a blood clot will necessarily develop. A negative result does not exclude other inherited or acquired causes of thrombophilia. This test does not detect existing blood clots and does not replace a medical evaluation.
