Thrombotest – Factor V Leiden Mutation (F5)

Product detailed description
The Thrombotest – Factor V Leiden Mutation (F5) genetic test is designed to identify an inherited predisposition to increased blood clotting (thrombophilia). It focuses on the Factor V Leiden mutation in the F5 gene, one of the most common genetic causes of an increased risk of venous thrombosis.
The F5 gene provides instructions for producing coagulation factor V, a protein involved in the blood clotting process. The Factor V Leiden mutation makes this protein less susceptible to normal inactivation by activated protein C. As a result, blood clotting activity may persist longer than usual, increasing the risk of abnormal blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
What can this genetic test tell you?
The test identifies whether you carry the Factor V Leiden mutation, which is associated with an increased risk of developing blood clots. It also determines whether the mutation is present in one copy of the gene (heterozygous) or both copies (homozygous), which is important for evaluating genetic risk.
Understanding your genetic predisposition may be particularly useful if you have a family history of venous thrombosis, have experienced a previous thromboembolic event, or require an individualized risk assessment in situations such as pregnancy, estrogen-containing hormonal contraception, surgery, or prolonged immobilization.
Who may benefit from this test?
Genetic testing may be recommended for individuals with a personal or family history of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, or when inherited thrombophilia is suspected. Testing should be considered in consultation with a healthcare professional, as it is not routinely necessary for everyone.
Important: A positive result does not mean that a blood clot will necessarily develop. A negative result does not exclude other inherited or acquired causes of thrombophilia. This test does not detect an existing blood clot. Results should be interpreted alongside personal and family medical history and other relevant risk factors.
