Histamine intolerance testing can be performed either from a blood sample or a stool sample, with each method providing a different perspective on histamine metabolism.

Histamine Testing from Blood

This test measures the level of the enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO), which is responsible for breaking down histamine obtained from food. Reduced levels or activity of this enzyme may be associated with a decreased ability of the body to metabolize histamine.

Possible results:

• < 3 U/mL: High likelihood of histamine intolerance (HIT)
• 3–10 U/mL: Histamine intolerance is likely; in this case, we recommend additional testing focused on histamine degradation
• > 10 U/mL: Low likelihood of histamine intolerance (HIT)

Histamine Testing from Stool

This test measures the concentration of histamine directly in the digestive tract. It may provide information about increased histamine production in the intestine, which can be related to the composition of the gut microbiome or the condition of the intestinal lining.

Histamine intolerance is a condition in which the body is unable to break down histamine efficiently or when histamine accumulates excessively. Histamine is a naturally occurring substance found both in the human body and in many foods. Elevated histamine levels may be associated with symptoms such as headaches, migraines, digestive problems, bloating, diarrhea, skin rashes, itching, flushing, runny nose, heart palpitations, or fatigue.

Diagnosing histamine intolerance can help improve the understanding of the relationship between symptoms and histamine metabolism. Based on the results, dietary modifications, reduction of histamine-rich foods, or additional follow-up tests focusing on gut health and digestive function may be considered.
